Travel to Spain…
We love Spain. My husband lived in Northern Spain for two years while serving a mission for our church. He fell in love with the country, people, language and culture. He has passed that love onto myself and my kids. Its a place that we have been to several times, and always love to return to.
Even though my husband lived in Northern Spain (Bilbao, Pamplona and San Sebastian), most of our time has been spent in Catalunya. Catalunya is a province in the North Eastern part of the country that stretches from the Mediterranean to the French and Andorran boarders. Barcelona is the major city in Catalunya and generally serves as our home base when we are there.
Barcelona is a beautiful, old European City. It is safe, easy to navigate and the people are amazing. It has it all; beautiful beaches, architecture, old world charm and amazing food. Nate and I both feel so comfortable there, we often talk about moving to Barcelona. It is a very walking friendly city and the weather is mild year round.
Soccer in Spain
It is no secret that in our family, soccer is king and there is no better city in the world for soccer than Barcelona. It’s stadium; Camp Nou is so historic and such a fun place to spend a day. You can take a tour, or if you are lucky catch a match. Even if you aren’t a soccer fan, soccer in Europe and especially Spain is something not to be missed.
One of our favorite things about Spain and really all of Europe is how prevalent soccer is. Even if you don’t get a chance to watch FC Barcelona in action consider seeing a match in any other major city. All of the teams are good and you really can’t go wrong no matter who you see.
Art, Food and Architecture
The food. We LOVE Spanish food. It is amazing. The pastries, sea food, tapas, Jamón, churros and chocolate, cheese, bread. We love it all. When we go to Barcelona we have our favorite restaurants that we love to go to time and time again. We also love to try new ones. One of our favorite things to do is to rent a car and drive out into the country. There are so many cute little towns with awesome restaurants and bakeries. It is amazing. In my opinion it is definitely worth it to take the time to get out of the cities and experience the Spanish county side.
Barcelona is known for its architecture and art. It is the home of Gaudi; who’s works include Park Guell and the Segrada Familia. There are also lesser known artists whose work can be seen all over the city. Take the time to visit the famous site, but also allow time to wander the streets and see the beauty that can be found around every corner. We really love to explore the Gothic Quarter and the Gracia Districts.
Spain has something for everyone. We are sure that if you decide to go you will love it as much as we do. Stay tuned for our favorite restaurants, hotels and tours.
